  • Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K 331 1784

this is a piano sonata in threein three movements. It is uncertain where and when Mozart composed the sonata however, Vienna or Salzburg around 1783 is currently thought to be most likely (Paris and dates as far back as 1778 have also been suggested).

  • I. Andante grazioso

Since the opening movement of this sonata is a theme and variation Mozart defied the convention of beginning a sonata with an allegro movement in sonata form. The theme is a siciliana, consisting of two 8-measure sections, each repeated, a structure shared by each variation. The tempo marking is Andante grazioso (walking pace, gracefully). It is in the key of A major.

Ludwig van Beethoven

1770-1827

220px-Beethoven.jpg

  • Sonata No.8 in C Minor, Op.13 (Pathétique)

The Pathétique was famous right from the moment it was performed, and it’s not hard to see why – it contains three incredibly attractive movements with very different characters + unheard-of expressiveness, and contains some of Beethoven’s best motivic manipulations.

  • MVT II. Adagio cantabile (Slowly, in a singing style)

George Gershwin 1916-1937

1916-1937

1523070002-expand-prize02.jpg

Three Preludes are short piano pieces by George Gershwin 1926.

  • 1. Allegro ben ritmato e deciso

The first prelude, in B-flat major, begins with a five-note blues motif; virtually all the melodic material in the piece is based on this theme. Syncopated rhythms based on the Brazilian baião and chords containing flattened sevenths occur throughout; these give the piece a strong jazz feel. Although these sounds are far from adventurous by modern standards, to the audiences of the late 1920s they were almost unheard of. Structurally, the piece is in ternary form; however, the impression on the listener is that of a fantasia. This effect is achieved by using snippets of various virtuoso techniques, such as repeated notes, octaves, scales, and crossed hands, each of which is used for only a moment before the piece catches a flicker of some new idea.

  • Someone to Watch Over Me 1926 Gemre Jazz

This is a song composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin. It was written for singer. Originally, "Someone to Watch Over Me" was an up-tempo swing, but upon experimenting one day George Gershwin played the song as a ballad, and it stuck ever since.

Sergei Rachmaninoff

1892 - 1943

9605-004-EDF31309.jpg

was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist and conductor of the late Romantic period, some of whose works are among the most popular in the Romantic repertoire. Born into a musical family, Rachmaninoff took up the piano at age four. He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1892 having already composed several piano and orchestral pieces. In Rachmaninoff's work, early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev, Mussorgsky, and other Russian composers gave way to a personal style notable for its song-like melodicism, expressiveness and rich orchestral colors. Rachmaninoff often featured the piano in his compositions, and he explored the expressive possibilities of the instrument through his own skills as a pianist.

Prelude in C♯ minor  Op.3 No.2 1892

This is one of the composer's most famous compositions. This work was one of the first the 19‑year‑old Rachmaninoff composed as a "Free Artist", after he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory on 29 May 1892

Bedrich Smetana

1824-1884

210px-Smetana.jpg

Richard Wagner

Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 15

The death of Smetana's daughter Bedřiška was the emotional impetus behind the composition of the Trio for Piano and Strings in G minor, Op. 15. After Bedřiška succumbed to scarlet fever on 6 September 1855, Smetana was devastated; the composer immersed himself in composition, producing the trio soon enough for it to be performed later that year. Critical response was negative and may have prompted Smetana to revise the piece two years later, despite the fact that Liszt praised the work when he heard it in 1856. It was the most significant piece of chamber music he had composed up to that time, but it was not published until 1879, in Hamburg.

The work is in three movements, all of which are in G minor:
- The first movement is intense and lyrical, and begins with the violin alone playing a theme on the dark G string. The theme's chromatic descent through a perfect fifth evokes a Baroque-era musical symbol for grief. In nineteenth century fashion, however, Smetana extends the melody before arriving at the secondary theme of this gloomy sonata-form movement. The second theme is brighter in character than the first, and this section is further lightened by upward chromatic shifts in harmony. The development section has a central high point, followed by meandering passages that give way to the recapitulation, which brings back the tragic mood.
